What is Substack?

Substack is content that may be described as newsletters, posts, essays, articles, blogs. It is focused. I decided to make my Substack about Flash Memoir. Flash writing is about writing small, prose-like; it has been called the haiku of prose. We all are familiar with the genre of memoir–though years ago my mother might have called it autobiography, if my mother had seriously read books.

This Fall I will be in Sweden speaking on Flash Memoir at the Tranås Fringe Festival, an international cultural festival involving all the arts.

Micro-memoir Workshop

It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the nighttime sky until we find that one star. The flash form of writing helps us to transform simple moments into something meaningful. In this 1-hour workshop we will explore the world of micro-memoir: What to leave in and what to take out, and how to identify the emotional center. Participants will learn how writing flash can build out one’s writing portfolio and contribute to bigger projects. Come with a notebook and your ideas. Jane Hertenstein is the author of over 100 published stories both macro and micro: fiction, creative non-fiction, and blurred genre. Her work has received a Pushcart nomination and been featured in the New York Times.
